투명인간 The Invisible Man (영어 원서 읽기) 1897년 발표. 인체의 세포에 유리와 같은 빛의 굴절도를 주어서 타인의 눈에 보이지 않게 하는 약품을 발명한 사나이가 자기 육체가 보이지 않게 되는 것을 이용하여 재산과 권력을 잡으려고 온갖 악행을 자행하여 사람들을 괴롭히는데, 끝내는 궁지에 몰려서 죽게 된다. 인간의 투명을 원하는 소망을 리얼하게 묘사한 SF적 착상의 기발함도 놀랄만 하지만 소외된 인간의 고독을 그렸다는 점에서 문학적으로도 높이 평가된다.
