Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman, Mr. Bennet living in Longbourn.

Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth.

『오만과 편견』은 제인 오스틴이 생전에 출간한 네 편의 소설 중 두 번째 작품으로, 오늘날까지도 독자들의 사랑을 받는 영문학의 고전이다. 날카로운 위트와 훌륭한 인물 묘사가 돋보이는 이 작품의 중심은 무신경한 어머니와 무관심한 아버지, 그리고 어머니가 기를 쓰고 시집 보내려 하는 서로 다른 성격의 다섯 딸로 구성된 베넷 집안이다. 19세기 초반 잉글랜드 전원지방을 무대로, 주인공인 둘째 딸 엘리자베스와 잘생기고 재산도 많지만 지극히 오만한 다시와의 좌충우돌 관계를 다루고 있다. 첫만남에서 다시로부터 그다지 예쁘지 않다는 말을 들은 엘리자베스는 즉각적으로 다시를 혐오하지만, 다시는 자신의 판단과는 달리 엘리자베스를 사랑하게 된다. 다시의 청혼은 엘리자베스의 거절로 엉망진창으로 끝나고, 결국 두 사람은 우여곡절을 거친 후 스스로의 오만과 편견을 극복한다.

소설에 역사적 배경이 전혀 없다는 비난도 있었지만, 사실 이 작품에서 볼 수 있는 조용하고 아무 일도 일어나지 않는 시골 사교계는 오스틴이 속해 있던 폐쇄적인 사회를 그대로 반영하고 있다. 오스틴은 그 나름의 편협한 오만과 편견을 지닌 이러한 사회를 흔들림 없는 정확함과 풍자로 그려내고 있다. 동시에 엘리자베스라는 너무나 공감 가는 인물을 주인공이자 예리한 평론가로 내세움으로써, 독자는 그녀의 이야기에 빠져들고 해피엔딩을 바라지 않을 수가 없게 된다. 엘리자베스라는 인물과 남녀 모두에게 공감을 이끌어내는 해피엔딩 러브 스토리야말로, 이 작품이 오늘날까지도 사랑을 받는 진짜 이유일 것이다.
