‘The Proem: By the Carpenter’ 등 19편의 단편들로 구성된 연작소설(聯作小說).
가상국가 ‘바나나 공화국(Banana republic)’을 통해 라틴아메리카의 혁명을 다룬 오 헨리의 처녀작이다. 은행원이던 오 헨리는 공금횡령죄를 저지르고 온두라스(Honduras)로 도피하여 수도 테구시갈파(Tegucigalpa)에 머문 경험을 토대로 를 썼다.
